Two gunshots were allegedly fired Monday afternoon close to the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) in Accra in an attempt to stop an alleged kidnaping incident.
A man who was driving a Mitsibushi Pajero registered GT 735-10, was said to have made a stop close to the Institute on the Abdul Nasser road to ask for directions to the main road leading to Osu.
Eyewitnesses within the enclave near the British High Commission told our reporter a woman believed to be in her 30s, was seen lying dazed in the front seat of the vehicle, a situation that raised suspicion and caused witnesses to raise alarm.
Two police men and some private security personnel who were on duty in the area were said to have quickly moved in to interrogate the man on a possible kidnapping incident.
When questioned by the Police, the man claimed to be offering the said woman, who he said is his customer, a lift but did not say where and why she was dazed in the front seat of his vehicle.
But they probed further as to why he had a police cap on the dashboard of his car when he is not a police officer, he was said to have become jittery and suddenly sped off.The police officers were said to have fired two gunshots at the vehicle and subsequently chased him in a taxi but could not catch up with driver.
When our reporter got to the scene, remnants of a taillight which the witnesses said came from the vehicle, were found on the ground.
According to them, the case was reported to the Police at Tesano. When contacted, the Tesano police confirmed receiving such information but declined to speak on record, and referred our reporter to the Police headquarters.
Officials at the Police CID headquarters however told our reporter they were unaware of the incident.
